Link to Cancer
Roundup, one of the most common weed killers today is under fire for the company manufactures it, Monsanto, hiding that one of its active ingredients is linked to cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization, found that glyphosate, the key ingredient in the popular weed killer Roundup, is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” Most people affected by Roundup were found to be diagnosed with Non Hodgkin lymphoma. The report stated that “The evidence in humans is from studies of exposures, mostly agricultural, in the USA, Canada, and Sweden published since 2001. In addition, there is convincing evidence that glyphosate also can cause cancer in laboratory animals.”
In March 2017, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria unsealed documents raising questions about Roundup’s safety and Monsanto’s research practices. Attorneys from the law firm Baum Hedlund have posted more than 75 documents about removing the shroud around Monsanto, on their website. These documents, which total more than 700 pages includes emails, text messages, company reports, and other records. The release of these documents exposes suspicious text messages and discussions about payments to scientists to influence their research results as well as Monsanto scientists ghostwriting for studies involving glyphosate. “This is a look behind the curtain,” said Baum Hedlund attorneys Brent Wisner. “These show that Monsanto has deliberately been stopping studies that look bad for them, ghostwriting literature and engaging in a whole host of corporate malfeasance. They (Monsanto) have been telling everybody that these products are safe because regulators have said they are safe, but it turns out that Monsanto has been in bed with U.S. regulators while misleading European regulators.” Monsanto has intentionally misinformed the EPA and attempted to derail any investigation/research into the effects of their product Roundup.
As of July 3rd, 2017, more than 100 lawsuits are pending against Monsanto Co. in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, filed by people alleging that exposure to Roundup herbicide caused them or their loved ones to develop Non Hodgkin lymphoma and that Monsanto covered up the risks. The cases have been combined as multidistrict litigation under Judge Vince Chhabria. Additionally, at least 1,100 plaintiffs have made similar claims against Monsanto in state courts.
